Umbrella company business professionals could learn a second language to make them more employable, as employers claim that these skills are highly important in certain industries.

A total of 80 per cent of senior staff in the manufacturing, IT and construction sectors believe that being able to speak more than one language is a crucial issue, a study by Rosetta Stone reveals.

The reasons for learning another language include relocating staff overseas and expanding to new locations.

Sylke Riester, Rosetta Stone''s managing director for Europe, claims: "It is clear that language barriers are presenting a major challenge in today''s globalised world."

However, Ms Riester suggests that through language learning programmes these barriers "can be quickly overcome".

Umbrella company contractors hoping to gain employment abroad could find learning a second language especially useful.
