Civil and public servants begin 48-hour strike
Some public services face disruption as civil service and public service staff begin a two-day strike (March 8th).

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) called the 48-hour action over fears that the government will cut low-paid civil and public service jobs "on the cheap", according to a PCS statement.

As a result of the strike various public services will be affected across the UK. Workers at courts, jobcentres, driving test centres, border controls and tax offices are amongst just some of the areas affected.

Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, accused the government of "tearing up" the contracts of civil servants and public servants on low pay whilst doing nothing to address bankers'' bonuses.

"Loyal civil and public servants won''t stand by and allow the government to cut jobs on the cheap. Those on strike today deliver services that touch our everyday lives from the cradle to the grave," he added.

A recent BBC English Regions survey mentioned the possibility of as many as 25,000 jobs in local councils across the country being under threat.
