IT contractors'' skill development ''is often neglected''

Over a third of IT contractors are not enhancing their skills and concentrating largely on their present situation, a new poll has revealed.

Jenrick IT conducted a survey amongst contractors and many respondents reported that they had frequently failed to update their accreditation or acquire new skills.

Managing director for the company Phil Fanthom said that IT contractors could easily get "sucked in" to the environments of their markets.
"This often means that self-development, in terms of skill enhancement and the gaining of accreditations, is often neglected," he said.
Mr Fanthom went on to explain that many contractors showed more interest in their present situation than planning for the future, especially when compared to permanent employees.
His comments follow an announcement from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation which noted the vast number of opportunities which the London Olympic Games will present for IT contractors.
Mr Fanthom advised contractors to be "aware" of their market environment and warned them that their "current best-seller" could be obsolete within a few years.
