UK Computer Skills Council: IT contractors in demand

IT contractors are increasingly in demand, despite a grim outlook for the rest of the UK's workforce, a new report has revealed.

A study conducted by the UK Computer Skills Council's (UKCSC) found that demand for IT contractors saw ten per cent growth in 2010's first quarter, compared with only four per cent for regular IT employees, Contractor UK reports.

The report attributed the increasing demand to the financial sector and electronics industries, but noted that the pay of IT contractors had only seen minimal growth.

"An overall increase in 'real pay' (i.e. actual earnings received) has yet to materialise," e-skills reported the UKCSC's paper as saying.

The findings come after last month saw the Federation of Small Businesses warn self-employed people to be wary of tax penalties under the Pay As You Earn system when undertaking a contract.

The UKCSC study also revealed that several skill sets had experienced plummeting rates of demand, such as contractors versed in Windows 2000, VPN, Windows NT and Prince Exchange.
