Research shows ''growing importance'' of social media to SMEs

Around 35 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are posting daily updates on social media sites, new research has found.

Daryl Willcox Publishing polled 269 companies about their usage of sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. It found that half of all respondents used social media, with a quarter posting infrequent updates.

Founder of the company Daryl Willcox said that the results indicated that many SMEs are seeing the benefits of the platform.

"The number of companies participating in social media on a daily basis shows the growing importance of this marketing channel," he said.

Mr Willcox went on to explain that 60 per cent of polled businesses reported positive results from engaging with their customers via social media.

Statistics from eMarketer indicate that the current generation of 18 top 34-year-olds are highly engaged with the platform, with just under 80 per cent of young adults interacting with at least one form of social media site.
